Winner of the December Quiz: Mark submitted the following essay on Pyramids in Egypt for the December Competition, and was selected as the most creative one amongst 97 submissions.
Pyramids
Pyramids were monumental funeral chambers of the pharaohs, who were rulers, worshiped as gods. The desert was the land of great pyramids.
The largest pyramids are a short distance from Cairo, the capital of Egypt. These pyramids were made with huge, heavy blocks of sandstone. How they were made it with such perfection is still unknown. The pyramids were built by slave laborers.
The ancients spoke of the seven wonders of the world which include great temples, statues, the Alexandria light house and the pyramids. Today only the pyramids remain. Since the Egyptians believed in life after death they made pyramids for the pharaohs so they could be reborn.
The Ancient pyramid sites of Giza and Saquara, and also at Luxor are probably the most important tourist attractions in Egypt. These sites contain enormous pyramids. The largest the Great Pyramid, was built as the tomb of the Pharaoh Khufu. When built, the Great Pyramid measured 147 m (481 ft) high with a square base measuring 230 m (756 ft) on each side.
The Egyptian pyramids were built from about 2700 BC to about 1000 BC; in the Americas, mound construction continued from 1200 BC until the Spanish conquest in AD 1519.
When these pyramids were built, builders made many false passage ways and traps to stop; robbers from stealing the pharaohs jewels which are buried with him.
The Egyptian pyramids are pyramidal in form, with four triangular sides that meet at a point at the top; the New World pyramids are four-sided, flat-topped polyhedrons.
According to the exterior design, pyramids fall into two distinct classes: the step pyramid, in which the four sides rise in a series of rectangular steps from the base to a rectangular platform; the other one is the true pyramids. True pyramids were first built at the beginning of the fourth Dynasty (2600 BC). The step pyramids are older than the true pyramids.
Congratulations Mark!
Winner of the January/February Quiz:
Draw a picture on an A4 or A3 paper to describe your imagination about the following extract from a travelerss notebook.
"The short bus ride out of town was the most crowded we have experienced, and we wondered if we would ever manage to get out at the right place. It was drizzling as we set off walking; we did not know it was a 1km trail and gradually started raining more heavily as we reached the waterfalls. The path was quite rough and slippery. We were surprised at how rugged it was, considering as a popular place with the local day-trippers. There were drink stalls at regular intervals along the path. From the number of them, they must expect plenty of business in the right kind of weather. The falls are 190 feet high with a good flow of water over them."

Winner of the March Quiz: Gabriela Diaz submitted the following essay about the Olympics, and was selected as the most creative one amongst 38 submissions.
The Olympics is a very important event which is a symbol
of human kind getting together, sharing the joy of been alive and living in peace. It is
also important because the Olympics encourages the athletes to perform their best to win a
gold medal on behalf of their country. Australians are going to have an opportunity to
show their culture to other nations and carry the Olympic torch to the Olympic stadium.
All nations are going to meet and compete each other at their best in the Olympics. Many
people are going to the Olympic stadium to cheer for their country, so they could give
couragement to the athlete that is competing for their country. Many athletes want to win
at the Olympics more than any other competitions because for them the Olympics is more
important. I am very proud of Australian athletes because they are good sportsmen and
because they are going to represent Australia at the Olympics.
Congratulations Gabriela!
